REVERENCE OF AYURVEDA

Ayurveda is one of the most ancient medical and health wisdoms of the world, its antiquity goes back to the sacred Vedas. It is a codified written tradition with unbroken practice of thousands of years in India and is flourishing even today as an official system of medicine with rich acceptability by the masses.

It is the science of life – Ayurveda is not merely a system of medicine but also imparts the knowledge to masses about the art of living a healthy life without suffering from various ailments. Specialized therapies and treatment procedures of Ayurveda while curing diseases and ailments strengthen the immune system in the body, thus helping in prevention of diseases and preservation as well as the promotion of positive health.  Ayurvedic medicine has attracted renewed interest of medical profession at large all over the world because of its holistic approach, safe medications with no side-effects and a range of unique therapeutic modalities.

Ayurveda conceives that the living body is made up of innumerable channels. Charaka, the foremost authority on Ayurveda proclaims the all pervasiveness of the channels and the significance of the need of their competence. It is obvious that due to wear and tear and exposure to morbid factors the body channels lose their competence leading to the channels getting blocked. Such a macro or micro blockade of channels leads to interruption of flow of nutrients, energies and impulses and also the bioavailability of medicaments. Such a morbid state of the body leads in turn to pre-disease condition making the body prone to a wide range of diseases. One of the most commonly associated bio-factor, which plays a crucial role in generic morbidity is hypo-functioning of Agni or digestive fire with production of a range of by-products of Mandagni categorically termed as Ama or toxins. Such Ama materials play a significant role in blockade of the channels. All such morbid situations require Sansodhana or Bio-purification as the main stay of treatment, both preventive and curative.

The Ayurvedic cure has a unique approach. It is a two-fold strategy comprising of –

1. Sansodhana or Bio-purification by Panchakarma (detoxification) treatments and related therapies

2. Sansamana or Palliation of imbalances by appropriately planned diet, drug and lifestyle interventions.

In Ayurveda more emphasis has been laid down on preservation of good health. Infact, Ayurveda is widely acknowledged as one of the world’s oldest system of healing and a complete approach to healthy living. According to Ayurveda, the human body is composed of five basic elements known as Panchamahabutas including –

1. Ether

2. Air

3. Water

4. Fire

5. Earth

Various Ayurvedic scholars after profound research and observations established a scientific correlativity between human life and cosmic life. Formation of both human body and cosmos are from Panchamahabutas. These five elements constitute three essential components of living body termed as Tridoshas- Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The combination of the three Doshas influences our mental, emotional and physical aspects. Each individual has a unique balance of all three of these doshas. Some body constitutions will be predominant in one dosha while others are a mixture of two or more.

  • Vata: The vata dosha is said to be made up of the air and ether elements.
  • Pitta: The pitta dosha is said to be made up of the fire and water elements.
  • Kapha: Within the kapha dosha there is a predominance of the water and earth elements.

However, the imbalance of the dosha in the body can lead to various health conditions. The Panchakarma process is essentially designed to restore the integrity of imbalances in the body.

Nadi Pariksha is the ancient Ayurvedic technique of diagnosis through the pulse. It can accurately diagnose physical, mental and emotional imbalances as well as diseases. It is a non- invasive science that enables to reach the root cause of health issues and not just address the symptoms.

The classical Ayurveda describes a radical method of bio-purification through five major procedures namely:

  • Vamana (Emesis)
  • Virechana (Purgation)
  • Vati (Enemata)
  • Nasya (Errhines)
  • Raktamoksana (Blood-letting)

These major radical purification procedures are performed after adequate Purva Karma or pre-operatory measures wherein the patient is prepared by Snehapana, Dipana, Swedana, which are done to restore the Agni (fire element in the body) and to push the toxins from cells, tissues and circulation. Panchakarma therapy primarily aims at cleansing the body of its accumulated impurities, toxins and nourishing the body tissues. Once this is achieved, it becomes very easy to rejuvenate all tissues and prevent the process of premature ageing. Thus life span of an individual is prolonged leading to a disease-free old age. Through this regimen, the digestive power increases, his disorders disappear and his health returns to normal senses, understanding and complexion become clear and individual acquires strength, vigor and virility. His ageing is restrained and he lives a long disease free life.

The great advances that have been made in the field of Panchakarma therapy in recent years, especially in Southern India have revolutionized the management of certain dreadful diseases with Panchakarma process.

Here are the two main objectives of Ayurveda –

1. To maintain and promote positive health of healthy individuals

2. To cure the disease of diseased ones
